Team effort to arrest robbery suspect proves award-worthy
n BY DAN CAMPANA
It started with an elderly woman being attacked and robbed and ended with five Chicago Police Officers and detectives working together to quickly nab one of the assailants in just three days.
The quintet — 18th District Officers Je- rome Turbyville and Roberto Paz and Area 3 Detectives Lawrence Aikin, James Cole- man and Eric Shearer — earned the Chica- go Police Memorial Foundation’s Officers of the Month Award for October.
On Aug. 25, the woman was entering a building at Grand and Michigan when an offender grabbed her from behind, took her purse and knocked her to the ground, where she struck her head. The offender fled, while the woman was taken to the hospital.
There, she told detectives she didn’t get a good look at the offender, but investigators immediately began working to find video and witnesses from the vicinity of the rob- bery. The detectives were able to locate sev- en different cameras yielding images of the robbery itself, as well as the fact that two
offenders were actually involved.
A Chicago Police pod camera observed the offenders about an hour after the rob- bery, prompting officers to alert CTA secu- rity to the possibility the two men might have used the L. That information proved helpful, as CTA officials reported that the men jumped the turnstile at the Grand Av- enue Red Line station and got on a south- bound train about 90 minutes after the robbery. Video later showed the pair exiting
the train at 63rd Street.
The detectives used facial recognition
software to help identify the suspects and generate a bulletin with their photos. That helped Turbyville and Paz make the con- nection to a man they arrested for sleep- ing on CTA property. After being shown the photos, the man admitted to being
involved in the robbery, prompting in- vestigators to search his residence, where they located the hat and gym shoes he was wearing during the robbery. Officers also learned the man was on parole at the time.
The investigation resulted in the man being charged with robbery and aggravat- ed battery of a senior citizen. The search continues for the second offender, officials said.
“Thanks to the excellent follow-up by the Area 3 detectives and the alert actions of the 018 District officers, a dangerous felon who preyed on a senior citizen is be- hind bars. We are proud to make these five officers our October officers of the month,” said CPMF Executive Director Phil Cline.
Added 18th District Commander Jill Ste- vens, “The collaboration with detectives and the 18th District, I can’t describe how great that is. Because they work so well to- gether, this all came together, and they were able to make a great arrest. These officers work tirelessly every single day, and this is one great example of the great job they do. They are very dedicated to the City of Chi- cago, and I thank them for everything.”
