Being a woman of culture, how do you find ways to uplift other
women? “I am an open person, and I embrace anyone who is a part of
what I do. When I touch the mic, it’s to embrace OUR people in
particular, which is also part of mentoring others. I don’t think I am
special in that regard…..I just hope that others will see this as an
example, and follow with similar actions. At the end of the day, that’s
why I embrace any and everyone in the business. My family, not just a
Trinidad or Guyanese family….I believe in the love, the culture and the
music.”
What does culture mean to you? “Everything, it’s been my life….it’s
all I know. I played mas at the age of one, on the Brooklyn Museum
stage, and have been doing that all my life……I mean, my first band
was at the age 14 in Miami.” The MAJORITY of my life, and we eh
doing no Math now, it’s just the MAJORITY of my life, I choose to do
this!”
By the way, mad props to you and Dj Khaled on the congratulatory
Instagram post he sent you. “Khaled is my boy, he comes FROM us,
we both came from the days of Mix 96 in New York, Rockers Island
and Mad House, where I miced for him. Khaled knows soca, so when
people were raving about him, he knows his music. He came to us
through Wicked D, who was his neighbor in Orlando. That was no paid
drop Khaled did, that was real love.”
You are also part of the Ichunes family. What are your thoughts on
the launch of Ichunes Entertainment Magazine? “At the end of the
day, Michael is one of those people whose mind never stops working.
He is a natural born entrepreneur, not that person that sits down and
waits for someone to do something for him, he makes things happen!
This is one of the things that makes him family, we compliment and
have a mutual respect for each other, and we’ve been each other’s
support system for everything that we do.”
This is our debut edition, with some focus on Cancer awareness,
please share your thoughts on this battle we are up
against…“Perfect!! My favorite color is pink, all my logos reflect that
color. It is all about awareness, because in any battle, knowledge is
important. Once there is awareness, people will continue to do what
they have to do, whether it is raising funds or doing research; it affects
everyone, particularly Caribbean women. We are at a higher risk for
cancer in all forms, particularly breast, so we have to be diligent.”
