An open letter
Dear Kid,
Today you came to me looking for a job. From the look of your shoulders
when you walked out, I suspect you have been turned down before. Or maybe
you believe that nobody wants to hire a kid just out of high school with no
experience.
Well, it happens that I did hire a teenager today. He had a big smile on his
face and he wore a necktie. What was so special about that kid? Experience?
No, he didn’t have any. It was his attitude that put him on the payroll instead
of you.
A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E.
He wanted that job bad enough to put on a clean shirt and to take the time to
find out something about our company before he came down here. He was here
at 9 a.m. too, while you were probably just rolling over in bed. He did his best
to impress me and that is where he edged you out. You know kid, men have
always gotten jobs the same way they get girls, by combing their hair, wearing a
clean shirt and acting interested.
You see, kid, folks who do the hiring are looking for kids that have “spark”. They
look for someone who looks energetic and eager. When you asked me, “What are
the hours?”, “When do I get a day off?” and “How much do I get paid?”, the red
light went on inside my head. I knew you would not get a job here.
It does not matter to me that you are behind in your car payments. That is your
problem. I need someone who will work for me as hard as he would work for
himself. The next time you go looking
for a job you need to think of this.
Jobs may not be that plentiful right
now but they are out there. Employ-
ers are always looking for smart,
energetic young people who will go
the extra mile and when they find
one they can’t wait to get them on
their payroll.
