One more thing, kid, watch out who you ask for letters of reference. Those same
teachers you are so disrespectful to in school, those people who are friends of
your parents but you can’t lift your head to smile or say hello, don’t you think
they might find it difficult to write a good reference letter for you? Who will you
find to say that you are polite and personable?
If you’ve paid a dime’s worth of attention to what I have said here today, I think
you will find a good job darned soon.
Good luck, kid! You are going to need it.
Tips not illustrated through books
1. Life is not fair. Get used to it.
2. The real world won’t care as much about your self esteem as your school
does. It will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good
about yourself.
3. Sorry, you won’t make $40,000 the first year out of high school.
4. If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.
5. Flipping burgers or washing floors are not beneath your dignity.
6. Being disrespectful to people in the real world will get you fired or
beat up.
7. It is not your parents’ fault if you screw up. You are responsible.
8. Before you were born your parents were not as boring as they are now.
They got that way by paying your bills, cleaning your room and listening
to you tell them how idealistic you are.
9. Before you start to scream at the world about saving the rain forests,
clean your room and pick up your own garbage.
10. Life is not divided into semesters. You will not get summers off, two
weeks at Christmas, one at Easter and a Spring break.
11. Your school may be outcome based. Life is not.
12. Smoking does not make you look cool – it makes you look like a moron.
13. You are not immortal.
