P. 13
DEMAND FOR WATER : PRIMARY CATEGORIES
Agriculture : Agriculture consumes almost 70%
of worldwide fresh water supplies. It takes around
3,000 litres of water to produce enough food to
satisfy one person’s daily dietary need. Efficiency in
water use in agriculture is critical to solving earth’s
water woes.
Industry : 22% of worldwide fresh water is used
by industries, big and small. Industries need water
for consumptive use (where water is a raw material
as a solvent) or as a cooling agent for plant and
machinery or for production of steam to power
various processes.
Households : 8% of worldwide water use is
for household purposes. These include usage
for drinking, bathing, cooking, sanitation, and
gardening. Basic household water requirement is
around 50 liters per person per day, excluding water
for gardens. Water required for drinking is between
2-5 litres per person.
