Pollinator Meadow
Studies around the world tell us that insect
populations are drastically declining. This
threatens both our food systems and all
wildlife. Fewer insects means fewer birds;
and so on up the food chain. In the time
since we began this project, we have seen
an abundance of life on this property. Aside
from some very diverse flora, Heritage
Gardens is home to bees, butterflies,
hummingbirds, eagles, and even deer.
.
In our desire to affect this ecosystem
as little as possible, we have decided to
forego the practice of using pesticides at
Heritage Gardens. This decision comes as
the result of much thought and research.
Our research also brought to light that
while natural grasslands or meadows are
a healthy habitat for insects and other
creatures, lawns such as those typically
found at cemeteries or golf courses are not.
For this reason, we have created certain
areas in the cemetery that are pollinator
meadows, covered in wildflowers and
native species of tall grasses, rather than a
traditional lawn.
It has always been our hope that the
cemetery would be a peaceful and
welcoming place for anyone who comes
to visit. We hope to create a cemetery full
of life. What better way to do this than to
allow all life forms - no matter how small -
to thrive here.
