ave you ever stopped by a
H gazebo at a zoo entrance for
directions to an animal, a dinosaur,
or the nearest restroom? Have you
been stumped by questions from
an inquisitive child: “How did three
eyelash vipers get their name?”
“What do those sloth bears eat?”
“Why is that giraffe’s neck so long?”
A friendly and knowledgeable zoo volunteer was
probably there to help. The Chicago Zoological
Society’s Volunteer Engagement program began in
1971 with 20 volunteers. This innovative program
celebrates its 50 anniversary this year. It’s come a
th
long way. In 2019 alone, 1,409 volunteers contribut-
ed 74,000 hours of service, valued at $1.9 million!
“Many have incredible skills,” said Regi Mezydlo,
director of Volunteer Engagement for the Chicago
Zoological Society (CZS) for the past 27 years.
“Many are former CEOs, CFOs, IT professionals,
attorneys, teachers, and nurses.”
Easy to spot in their CZS-green garb, volunteers
are posted at zoo entrances, in zoo buildings, and
outside of animal habitats. They facilitate early child-
hood activities at HAMILL FAMILY PLAY ZOO,
hand out candy during Boo! at the Zoo, and assist
guests during Holiday Magic® festivities.
The volunteers range in age from 18 to 101 and
51 of them have served for 25 or more years. Jeroma
Zahour—currently in the Membership department—
is the zoo’s longest-serving volunteer at 47 years!
Who are they and what keeps them coming back?
Five volunteers tell their stories.
