PROGRAMS Adopt Your Favorite Animal

In each issue, we introduce you to one of the dozens
of animals in our Animal Adoption Program.
When you adopt an animal, your donation helps provide expert
care for that animal for one year.

Arrival at Brookfield Zoo: Quano was born in 2018 at the Basel
Zoo in Switzerland. He arrived at Brookfield Zoo in March 2020 on
a breeding recommendation from the Western Gray Kangaroo
Species Survival Plan®. Quano will be our future breeding male.
Marsupials: Kangaroos belong to a group of mammals called
“marsupials” that are mainly found in Australia and New Guinea.
Marsupials have a very short gestation period—a kangaroo
offspring, called a "joey," only spends about 30 days in its mother’s
womb. When it's the size of a jelly bean, a joey hauls itself up from
the mother's birth canal and into her pouch. It spends months
nursing on her rich milk until it is weaned and finally leaves the
pouch for good after a year to 18 months. Other marsupials include
wallabies, wombats, koalas, and Tasmanian devils. The opossum is
a marsupial found in the Americas.
Diet: Kangaroos are herbivores, or plant eaters. A kangaroo's
stomach has two chambers. After food is swallowed, it is spit up,
          rechewed, and swallowed again.
Fun facts: A group of kangaroos is called a “mob.” Kangaroos
are the largest animals in the world that hop to get around. A male
kangaroo can travel 30 feet in a single hop and reach speeds of
30 to 40 miles per hour. Their large ears can turn in all directions
to pick up sounds. During hot weather, kangaroos lick their
forearms, which promotes heat loss through evaporation.
Conservation threats: Habitat loss, drought, wild fires, and
excessive heat caused by global warming.
