SAFE PRACTICES
Fifty years ago, the immobilization of most zoo
animals was considered high risk. Today, with new
drugs and advancements in technology, most species
are easily anesthetized for routine procedures. But for
some species, such as giraffes and dolphins, the high
risk of anesthesia still must be balanced against the
benefit of a procedure. Medical staff at Brookfield
Zoo are developing new tools to improve the process
of anesthesia for these species.
The Society is the leader in the field of
anesthesia for zoo animals and has on staff Dr.
Sathya Chinnadurai, the only veterinarian in
North America who is board-certified in both
zoological medicine and anesthesiology. Under his
guidance, our staff foster improvements and conduct
research in anesthesia techniques to make routine
immobilizations safer.
