house, played pinochle, danced. Had fun. Then we went to mid-
night show. Grand time. After show went to Moore’s. George told
me what he had wished on my ring after the show. He said, “He
hoped things keep going on like they have been.”
End note: End of good old ’35 when George and I had our
first date on November 8.
1936
Age 16, turns 17 on 12 July 1936
Has known George Fritscher for six weeks
January 1. We went down to Ruyle’s to spend the day. Eustacia
Ruyle and I went riding around town in afternoon. Then we took
her aunt and uncle to the river. Had a good time. Got home about 9.
January 2. Marty, Lil, Gloria, all the gang and I went uptown.
Went to Matthew’s. Marty wanted us to come out in eve, but, I
didn’t go. Stayed home and played cards.
January 3. All of us kids went uptown again. Went to Mat-
thew’s. Stayed up until about 5. In eve. we all went out to Gloria’s.
Came home in a taxi. Good time.
January 4. George called me up about 2:30. He and Jim came
up for supper. We went to the show, It’s a Great Life with Joe Mor-
rison and Paul Kelly. We went down to Merrigan’s afterwards.
George bought me a little Santa Claus. Grand time. George threw
Joe’s picture on the floor and upside down and everything else. I
kept picking it up until he got mad so I left it lay. Mother picked
it up next morning.
January 5. George came home with me after Church. Stayed
till 11:30. Called a taxi, went home. Beulah came up in afternoon.
Was I surprised? Marty and Gloria and all the kids came up. Beulah
left about 5. George came up at 5:30. We listened to the radio and
