Scent work is Chillies favourite division to
train and so it should be, pinschers have one
of the best noses in the business! She excels
in this and catches a scent or follows a trail
impeccably. This training has been extremely
helpful in her recall training as pinschers
were bred to be independent thinkers and rat
catchers, she uses her nose to go tracking
animals she wants to hunt leaving me in the
dust! Since we have been scent training it has
become more of a team effort and I am finding
she is including me more in her choices of when
to go off following a scent or not.
Another sport we dabble in is heel to music and
freestyle. This is incorporating obedience and
trick training to music! Chilli has proven to enjoy
this if the reward is high enough! Its fast moving
and she loves remembering routines to show
off how clever she is knowing what comes next!
We also train in canicross, which is the sport of
running with your dog; this is great as pinschers
have endless energy!
Lastly, Chilli accompanies me on my adventures
on my stand-up paddleboard. She adores this
adventure as it lets her sniff lots of smells and
chase the duck’s closer than she could on land!
independent thinking, but this just makes it more
To conclude, Pinschers are a highly versatile fun and rewarding at the end! They do not work
dog which can be trained in any division for free; they need to know the reward is worth
and excel in them with the correct guidance! the action otherwise they will decide it is not
However, they can be hard to train due to their worth it!
As intelligent as they are it
can be a gift and a curse! The
main problem you will find with
a pinscher is not that they are
being stubborn, or knowingly
disobeying but simply finding
the correct thing to motivate
them! It has taken me 12
months and I am only now
starting to understand what
motivates my girl correctly. But
persevere through this and
you will have a very obedient,
friendly family companion.”
