 SERVICE IN THE COMMUNITY UPDATES
   SERVING AS A UNIT LEADER
Last November 2019, Cyd and I were asked to be one of the Unit Leaders in our chapter. I was uncertain to accept the role as Unit Leaders for two reasons:
1. I was afraid that I would not be able to perform the duties expected of me due to my work schedules.
2. I have applied for a promotion in our department which would entail more responsibilities.
But God, a Master Planner that He is, has better plans for me. He removed the obstacle for me to accept the role as Unit Leader. Suddenly all vacant positions for promotion were cancelled.
I said to myself may be this is not yet the right time to be promoted. Maybe God wants me to work in His vineyard first.
“God’s way is better than your way. His plan is bigger than your plan. His dream for your life is more rewarding, more fulfilling, better than you have ever dreamed of. Now stay open and let God do it His way.” Looking back at it now, I think that the offer to become a Unit Leader was truly one of God’s plans for me. He may not have given me a promotion in my workplace, but He gave me a promotion in the chapter where I could serve Him and glorify His name.
Cyd has always been my strength when it comes to decision making, especially in the community. I asked her if she was okay with us taking on this new challenge and she answered, “it is your decision on what is in your heart and maybe it is God’s call.” I believe that the Lord God will be there to guide and lead us as we take on this new assignment and so, after a very short discernment, I informed our chapter head that we will accept the responsibility.
WHAT IS A UNIT LEADER?
In general, a BCBP community Unit Leader is the one who directly cares for the Action Group Leaders and is responsible not only for the life of the action group leaders, but also for all the members entrusted in the unit. It is our role as Unit Leaders to join them in their spiritual journey; besides a Unit Leader is a role and not a position.
WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?
When we attended the BCBP Pastoral Seminar last year, I found out that being a Unit Leader was not that easy. In fact, it is a challenging role. Unit Leaders are obliged to accomplish what was being emphasized in the pastoral care system of the BCBP. Part of our responsibilities is to give deep care and services to committed Action Group Leaders. It is like shepherding them to ensure that the life of the Action Group Leaders or AGLs goes well together with the life of the entire members of the unit.
Part of our role as Unit Leaders, is to oversee how the action group leaders are caring for new members based on the formation program; to make follow ups and assessments; to provide ongoing training for the Action Group Leaders and attend chapter governance meetings where we can address general and personal matters of the unit.
