Use  the  main  line  to  tie  two  half  hitches  (see
                    page 23) over the ends of both bights as shown in

                    the  photograph.  Slowly  pull  on  both  the  main
                    parts of the line, taking care to keep the knot in
                    its  proper  shape  and form.  The  two  loops at the

                    ends of the knot need to stay approximately the
                    same size.

                For sailors, being able to create an “eye,” or a loop, at the

                end  of  a  rope  was  once  considered  a  basic  and  important
                skill.  Although  ropes  with  eyes  can  now  be  purchased,  a

                reliable one can be made with this technique. It only works
                with laid ropes, and if the rope is hard-laid (see page 2) you

                will probably need a tool to work the strands apart. Tucking
                the  strands  three  times  works  well  with  fiber  ropes,  but
