               Medium lay: the standard tightness of twist in a natural rope, as distinct

               from a soft or a hard lay.

               Messenger, see heaving line.


               Midshipman’s hitch: a simple variation on the backwall hitch (see page 8),

               but more secure.


               Take the rope over the hook and take a full turn around the entire hook
               before finishing with a half hitch (figure 92). The hitch will hold fast,
               provided a constant pressure is applied to the standing end.
