16 16 JONIŠKIS DISTRICT
Semigallia is a historical region that once stretched across Latvian and Lithua-
nian territories. It is popular for its historical heritage of Semigallian tribes. No-
wadays, the Lithuanian part of Semigallia is an unofficial subregion of Aukštaiti-
ja, that stretches along the border of Latvia. This region is united by the mutual
heritage of tribal origin, history and its relics, as well as the rebellious Semigal-
lian spirit. The largest town titled as the capital of the present-day Lithuanian
part of Semigallia is Joniškis. We invite you to experience Semigallian spirit of
Joniškis district.

23. JONIŠKIS CHURCH OF THE ASSUMPTION OF
THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY INTO HEAVEN
The church history dates back to 1536,
when on the initiative of Vilnius bishop
Jonas the territory inhabited as early as
in the 7th century was baptized. In 1901,
the church acquired the current appe-
arance and the stepped cross-shaped
plan. The interior of the church is par-
ticularly ornate and majestic. Its accent
is symmetrically positioned 7 neo-Ba-
roque brick altars. The niches of the
walls are adorned with neo-Baroque
sculptures of the Blessed Virgin Mary of
Sorrows, St Casimir, St Joseph, Christ
the Lord of the World and other saints,
made by professional sculptors. The
paintings on the ceiling of the church
depict biblical narratives.
