            32. THE ENSEMBLE OF THE CHURCH AND THE MONASTERY IN TYTUVĖNAI
Due to an artistic appearance and a combination of ar-
chitectural styles, a unique ensemble is an original art
monument not only in Lithuania but also in the context of
north eastern European art. According to many art critics,
Tytuvėnai Ensemble is an inexhaustible treasure trove of
historical, cultural, architectural, and art monuments.

         One of the historical monu-
         ments here is the surviving
         building of the former Jesuit
         College (the early 17th centu-
ry). It is a part of a huge com-
         plex of Jesuit buildings, which
once existed in Kražiai. In 1616,
         Jesuits founded Kražiai Colle-
ge – the most important centre
         of education and religious life
in Samogitia. The area of abo-
ut 4 hectares was occupied by
as many as 22 buildings for all
         kinds of purposes.
