44. PAKRUOJIS REGION ŽIEMGALA MUSEUM IN ŽEIMELIS

The town of Žeimelis is wonderful and old.
In the times of the Grand Dutchy of Lithua-
nia, this was the last stop before leaving the
country and entering the Livonian lands.
Travellers and merchants could overnight
in Žeimelis and spend money in a dozen of
the town’s pubs and inns. Still earlier, the
Semigallian tribe lived here. Their heritage
along with other abundant exhibits of this
land is preserved in Žiemgala Museum in
Žeimelis. The museum has accumulated
over 6,000 exhibits, and the museum’s ar-
chaeology department is particularly valu-
able. The museum devotes a large amount
of space to throw light on the activities of
ethnic communities – Jews, Latvians, and
Russian Old Believers.

45. LAUKSODIS ST ALOYZAS GONZAGA CHURCH
An exclusive and the only one such in Li-
thuania. The 270-year-old wooden basili-
ca. The basilica is the oldest style of eccle-
siastical architecture. The churches of the
first centuries in Rome and Vilnius Arch-
cathedral were built in the basilica style –
all of them where brick churches. There are
only a few wooden basilicas in the world,
one of which is in the village of Laukso-
dis and is dedicated to St Aloyzas Gonzaga
(Italy). The environment of the church is
extremely beautiful and cosy – its space is
surrounded by the green land area ending
at the stream. We invite you to come and
