           CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
           HOW IT WORKS

The crankshaft position sensor is mounted next to
the crankshaft pulley, which is a Holzer effect
sensor. The engine control module (ECM) provides
a 5V power to the engine camshaft speed / position
sensor through the sensor power circuit. The ECM
also provides a ground to the sensor circuit. The
crankshaft speed / position sensor provides a signal
to the ECM via the crankshaft speed / position
sensor signal circuit. When the crankshaft speed
indicator ring turns the sensor, the sensor generates
a signal to be sent to the ECM. The ECM identifies
the signal and converts it to an engine speed
reading, and then determines the engine position
according to the missing teeth of the speed indicator
                                                      ring.
