Veterans Day Nov.11
Residents Support ‘Greenlight For Vets’ Initiative
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
This year, a new way to show support for veterans is taking shape. People through- out the country are being asked to change one light bulb at their home or office to the color green, on Veterans Day, November 11th. The color “green,” was chosen because it is the color of hope, renewal, and well-being.
This simple action is in- tended to spark a national con- versation regarding the recognition of veterans, and “greenlight” them forward as valued members of our com- munities. Residents are en- couraged to then take a photo and post it on the internet using the hashtag #greenligh- tavet.
The initiative is sponsored by Walmart, in conjunction with several veteran advocacy groups. Additionally, Walmart has pledged to hire 250,000 veterans by 2020.
Some Tampa residents said they are in support of the initiative and plan to partici- pate.
Ross Anderson said, “No, I had not heard about the initiative, but I will participate. Anything that we can do to

support our Veterans we need to do without question.
“When you think about all the lives that have been lost, that alone should cause us to support them. Equally, impor- tant is to support all of the young men and women who made back home after serving and protecting our freedom.”
Ms. Joyce Cotton said, “I had not heard about this Wal- mart initiative. I will definitely participate in changing one of my lights to Green.”
Danny Green said, “I

think it's a great thing that Walmart doing this for the vet- erans. I am a Veteran who served 22 years in United States Army. It’s great that Walmart is giving veterans job opportunities.
“I will support the cause by putting a green light on my porch. For myself and other veterans around the world, I think other organizations should do the same for veter8ians. I try to do every- thing possible to help other veterans.”
Rev. Karen Jackson
Sims said, “Yes, I had heard about it and our family will definitely participate.”

world for the American ideals, which were long denied them here at home. The burden and struggles placed on veterans are more magnified for African Americans, both while in uni- form and after their service is completed.
“Hopefully, Walmart’s ini- tiative will provide all veterans with needed jobs and draw at- tention to the plight of our vet- erans. Moreover, Walmart must pay a sufficient living wage that allows them to live in dignity and provide for their families.”
