This show will feature gospel artist, Bre Canty, Terry Harris out of Jack- sonville, Florida, and the main act, Darion “Hilari- ous” Perkins. Saxophonist Marlon Boone will also be performing.
Perkins is originally from Kansas City, Missouri, but now calls the state of Georgia home.
When Perkins was 8- years-old, he said he received the need to make people laugh.
TOO SMOOTH
noticed.
“I did the secular market
for 13 years, and when I turned 30, I decided to per- form only Gospel comedy.”
Perkins said his comedy in the secular market was never raunchy, but he con- siders himself a creator and he understood what he needed to be a comedian.
“I wanted to have a voice that would empower people. My act always reflected what was going on in society as a secular comedian, but I was- n’t comfortable with it.
“Since then I’ve toured with a lot of Christian groups and Christian film produc- tions. I’ve been just as
blessed in this market as I was in the secular market.”
Perkins said he’s begin- ning to rediscover his voice and the power it has. In his comedy routines, he says he tries to bring biblical charac- ters to life and put as much emotion into his perform- ances as he can.
“I’ve worked with other Gospel comedians, and we’ve all come together.
“With secular comedians, I think it’s more about the
laugh. My comedy is inter- preted, and I like to help my audience understand the comedy.”
Perkins said he’s worked with Too Smooth for quite some time, and he really en- joys it.
“I think Too Smooth is honest, and played a major role in my transition by opening a lot of doors for me.
“I write my own material, and I have no problem com- ing up with new material.”
“When I turned 12 I saw a comedian on television, and that’s when I knew comedy was going to be my career.
“I started pursuing acting classes and later studied dif- ferent characters to make the best use of my voice. At the age of 19, I started perform- ing in night clubs. That over- whelmed me and I lost my voice.”
Perkins said from that point on, he was blessed to have been a part of some Christian productions who were seeking comedians.
“Nothing broke for me right away, but once I was able to do 15 different char- acters in one set, I became
