MARJORIE POWELL INTRO TALKING POINTS-Page 1 of 4
Talking Points
• Good Afternoon, I’m Soror Marjorie Powell and it is my esteemed
pleasure to serve as the Senior Vice President and Chief of Human Resources at
AARP.
• On behalf of AARP I would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations on
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s 54th National Convention!
• We are proud of the continued collaborations between AARP and Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated that extends back many years where both
organizations have worked collaboratively to positively impact communities across
the country.
• And, while many of you are probably familiar with AARP and likely carry
our red membership card, you may not know that we are the nation’s largest
nonprofit, nonpartisan organization.
• We’ve recently celebrated our 60th birthday and have spent the last six
decades dedicated to advocating for and empowering adults 50 and older and their
families.
• Which means, AARP has been advocating on your behalf before you
even thought about turning 50!
• We are a global thought-leader on aging and have a major national
presence and offices in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Islands.
• Most people do not know that we are in fact, a volunteer-led
organization. Advocating and providing resources on topics like, caregiving, financial
and physical wellness. We can’t do this important work without having leaders such
as yourself at the table.
• I encourage you all to look for potential connections to work
collaboratively in your states to help those 50 plus and their families to live longer
and healthier lives as we age.
• And last year, we launched a free weekly email newsletter, called Sisters
from AARP. It is written by Black women for Black woman. With topics such as
money, relationships, health, and travel you don’t want to miss it! Please sign up to
receive it at Sistersletter.com, Text 50757 or find Sisters from AARP on FB and
Instagram. 13
