Lesson 4.B: TYPE OF FRACTIONS
Two Fundamental Rules
When we are working with fractions, we have to remember the following rules:
1. The value of a fraction is not changed by multiplying both the numerator and
denominator by the same number.
1 2 2 1
Example 1: × = =
3 2 6 3
2 3 6 2
Example 2: × = =
5 3 15 5
2. The value of a fraction is not changed by dividing both the numerator and the
denominator by the same number.

4 2 4 2
Example l: = 2 = therefore, =

3 1 1 3 3
Example 2: = 3 = = × =
4 4 4 1 4 4

• Changing Improper Fractions to Whole or Mixed Numbers
To change an improper fraction to a whole or mixed number, divide the numerator by
the denominator.
If there is no remainder, the quotient becomes the answer.
If there is a remainder, such remainder becomes the numerator in the answer. The
divisor or original denominator is retained in the answer, while the quotient becomes the whole
number part of the mixed number.
