Lesson 4.C: CONVERSIONS OF FRACTION, DECIMALS, AND PERCENTAGE

                     • Changing a Percent to a Fraction

To change a percent to a fraction, convert the percent to a decimal then convert the

                 decimal to fractional form.

Here are some examples to illustrate this rule.

                          Example 1. 5% = 0.05 = 5 = 1
                                                    100 20
                                        1
                          Example 2. 5 % = 0.055 = 55 = 11
                                        2 1000 200
                                                           1
                          Example 3. 20% = 0.20 = 20 =
                                                     100 5
                                                               1
                          Example 4. 225% = 2.25 = 2 25 = 2
                                                        100 4
                 D. Operations with Fractions

                 Adding and Subtracting Fractions

When adding and subtracting fractions, the first thing to check is if the denominators are

                 the same.

                     • Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators

If the denominators are the same: just add or subtract the numerators, and write the
                        result over the same denominator.

                                                                     ±
                                                           ± =

                                                            6
                                                  4
                                Example 1: 2 + = 2+4 =
                                              7 7 7 7
                                                  6
                                                            3
                                Example 2: 9 − = 9+6 =
                                              5 5 5 5
                     • Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators

If the denominators are not the same, then you have to use equivalent fractions

which do have a common denominator. To do this, you need to find the least common

multiple (LCM) of the two denominators.

                                                  5
                                Example 1: 3 + = 3×3 + 5×4 = 9 + 20 =
                                              4 3 4×3 3×4 12 12
                                                                   7

                                                                        6
                                                   3
                                                        7
                                Example 2: 7 − = − 3×2 = − =
                                              4 2 4 2×2 4 4
