P. 60
Lesson 4.B: TYPE OF FRACTIONS
• Changing Fractions to Higher Terms
To change a fraction to higher terms, multiply both numerator and denominator by the
same number.
3
Example 1: Change the fraction to an equivalent fraction having a denominator of 16.
4
3 ?
Solution: =
4 16
16 ÷ 4 = 4; We can then multiply the numerator and denominator by 4,
3×4 12
thus, =
4×4 16
7
Example 2: Change to an equivalent fraction having a denominator of 54.
9
7 ?
Solution: =
9 54
54 ÷ 9 = 6; We can then multiply both the numerator and the denominator
7×6 42
by 6, thus, =
9×6 54
As we know, the value of a fraction is not changed by multiplying both the numerator
and denominator by the same number.
C. Conversions of Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
• Changing Fractions to Decimals
To change a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator and carry
the division until the remainder is zero, or as required for rounding
Here are some examples to illustrate this point.

Example 1. Express as decimal Example 2. Convert to decimals
4 7
0.25 0.857
1 Solution: 7 6.000
Solution: 4 = 1 ÷ 4 = 4 1.00
08 5.60
0.20 0.40
0.20 0.35
The answer is 0.25 0.00 50
