Lesson 4.C: CONVERSIONS OF FRACTION, DECIMALS, AND PERCENTAGES

                     • Changing Decimals to Fractions
We can convert a decimal to a fraction simply by writing it as a fraction and rename it

in its simplest term. This can be done by omitting the decimal point in the given number and
make the given number the numerator of the fraction. The denominator depends on the

positional value of the rightmost digit of the decimal number.

                     Here are some examples.

                                                     1
                          Example 1: 0.5 = 5 =
                                                10 2
                                                           3
                          Example 2: a.) 5.75 = 5 75 = 5
                                                    100 4
                                       b.) 3.31 = 3 31
                                                    100
                          Example 3: a.) 0.623 = 623
                                                   1000
                                                              1
                                       b.) 0.125 = 125 = 5 =
                                                   1000 40 8
                     • Changing Decimals to Percentage
To change a decimal to a percent, move the decimal point two places to the right, and

                    annex the % symbol. M1_L3

                          Example l: 0.05 = 0.05. = 5%

                          Example 2: 1.5 = 1.50. = 150%

                          Example 3: 0.025 = 0.02.5 = 2.5%

                     • Changing Fractions to Percentage
To change a fraction to a percent, first, convert the fraction to a decimal, then convert the

                 decimal to percent form.

Here are some examples to illustrate this point.
                          Example 1: 1 = 0.25 = 25%
                                          4
                                           4
                          Example 2: 3 = 3.8 = 380%
                                           5

                                              0.833
                          Example 3: 6 5.000
                                             4.80
                                             0.20
                                             0.18
                                                20
                                                18 0.833 = 83.3%
                                                02
