7. BASELINE ECOLOGICAL CONDITIONS
DESIGNATED SITES
Statutory Sites of International Importance
7.1 There are two Ramsar sites, two Special Protection Area (SPA) and one Special Area of Conservation
(SAC) located within 6km of the survey site.

Ramsar Medway 2.7 km north Qualifies under criterion 5 for supporting internationally
Estuary and important assemblages of waterfowl. Qualifies under
Marshes criterion 6 for supporting internationally important numbers
of breeding ringed plover (Charadrius hiaticula) and black-
tailed godwit (Limosa limosa islandica) and over wintering
grey plover (Pluvialis squatarola), red knot (Calidris canutus
islandica), dunlin (Calidris alpina alpina) and common
redshank (Tringa totanus totanus) (JNCC, 2008).
Ramsar The Swale 5.4 km east A complex of brackish and freshwater, floodplain grazing
marsh with ditches, and intertidal saltmarsh and mudflat.
These habitats together support internationally important
numbers of wintering waterfowl and rare wetland birds breed
in important numbers. The saltmarsh and grazing marsh are
of international importance for their diverse assemblages of
wetland plants and invertebrates (JNCC, 2008).
SPA Medway 2.7 km north Article 4.1 of the Habitats Directive for supporting
Estuary and populations of European importance of over wintering hen
Marshes harrier (Circus cyaneus) and breeding avocet (Recurvirostra
avosetta). Article 4.2 of the Habitats Directive for supporting
dunlin (Calidris alpina alpina), red knot (Calidris canutus),
black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa islandica), grey plover
(Pluvialis squatarola) and redshank (Tringa totanus). The
site regularly support on passage common ringed plover
(Charadrius hiaticula). Article 4.2 of the Habitats Directive for
supporting an internationally important assemblage of birds
(JNCC, 2015).
SPA The Swale 5.4 km east Article 4.4 qualification (79/409/EEC)
Over winter the area regularly supports An internationally
important assemblage of birds including Branta bernicla
bernicla, Calidris alpina alpina, Anas strepera , Anas crecca,
Haematopus ostralegus , Charadrius hiaticula , Pluvialis
squatarola, Calidris alpina alpina, Numenius arquata, Tringa
totanus (JNCC, 2015).
