29 FISHERMAN’S LOOP 29a
The Fisherman’s Loop, Englishman’s Loop or
True-Lover’s Loop is hardly a sailor’s knot, but is A
well known to fishermen. It looks strong, but can
have a low breaking strength. However, it is often
used in light lines or filaments.
To tie it, form two Overlapping Loops (29a) and
draw the upper part A down and out through the
centre B. The finished knot, when settled down B
(29b), has two Overhand Knots that lie snugly
together and cannot slip (hence, perhaps, the
True-Lover’s name). Like many other knots, this
is just one method of tying the knot, but it has
the benefit of few steps.
