            33 TARBUCK KNOT 33a
The Tarbuck Knot, like the Midshipman’s Hitch
(32), provides a secure loop. It is a little more
complicated to form, but is well suited to modern
synthetic ropes and is often used by climbers.
Start by forming a loop with the working end
tucked up through it (33a). Take another turn
around and down the side of the loop (33b) before
leading the working end up over the round turns
to pass behind the standing part (33c). Finish by
tucking the working end across and under in a
Figure of Eight pattern as in 33d. Work the knot
                                                                33b
tight and apply load (33e). As with the Midshipman’s
Hitch, there may be a little slippage initially, but it
will quickly grip and hold securely.
