Tuesday – Home the backway

Having all suffered through the long stretch of 40kph roadworks between Stratford and Bairns-
dale on the way down it was determined we would travel the back roads towards home.
Up the track back out of camp again for the last time.

At the main road Paul & Sue headed East towards the coast and The Mallacoota Explorer Trip.
We volunteered John to head off first up the narrow one lane section of the “main” road to dis-
courage oncoming traffic. It would not be fun to back a trailer along this section of road.
This plan worked well and soon we were out of the park and heading home, we travelled in a
couple of convoys.

After a few false starts North of Bairnsdale we all found the back roads. A pleasant drive through
farmlands on good bitumen, a few dirt roads and even a short section through a plantation near
Briagolong.
A quick if wet comfort and lunch stop at Heyfield and finally back on the freeway near Morwell,
for an easy run home.

After 5 years of track clearing in Far East Gippsland we finally did some non-track clearing
4wding, although “The Iconic Snowy River Drive” could certainly do with the Yarra Valley 4x4
Track Clearing Treatment.
