something that must be avoided, as Chazal were very strict about
this matter. This subject is brought down in Gemara Sanhedrin

[ 6 ] Oppressive \ Abusive speech: This esur is learned from .
the pasuk (Vayikrah 25:17) “And one man shall not oppress his
fellow Jew,” meaning, one may not annoy his fellow Jew (in any ,רוֹדַּה תוֹנוֲֹע וּבּרַ ,םוֹלָשְׁו סַחֶשׁ ,תֵעְבּ וּלִּפֲאֶשׁ ,תוֹרוֹהְל
way). Chazal have taught (Babba Metziah 59a) that one may
not do things that would annoy one’s wife, and all the more so
to those who provide one’s domestic services, particularly if the
provider of that service is a widow or orphan. The sin of one who
upsets a widow or an orphan is very grave.
[ 7 ] Embarrassment: One may not use language that would
cause embarrassment even when reprimanding someone, as the ."
pasuk states (Vayikrah 19:17) “You shall rebuke your fellow Jew
but not to the point of causing sin.”
[ 8 ] Haughtiness \ Pride: This esur is learned from the pasuk
(Devarim 8:11) “Be very careful not to forget Hashem your G-d,”
which is a warning to those who are haughty, as the Gemara Sotah ,הרָיִמְשַּׁה קֶסֵעְבּ וֹשְׁפַנ תֶא סיִנְכִהֶשּׁ הַמ לַע ,םוֹי לָכּ לַע
(5a) relates. Please see that reference. Even pride that is secreted
within one’s heart is forbidden, as the pasuk states (Mishle 16:5)
“Those who possess a haughty heart are disgusting to Hashem.”
[ 9 ] Argumentative \ Provocative \ Controversial speech: This
esur follows from the pasuk (Bamidbar 17:5) “And you shall not
be like Korach and his supporters,” as the Gemara Sanhedrin .
relates (110a) that this is a warning not to get involved in disputes.
Included in this category are all of the preceding categories of ,הרָיִמְשַּׁה תַבוֹחְבּ וּנדְַחִיֶּשׁ ,םיִנָיְנִע הרָָשֲׂעָה לָכּ הֵנִּהְו .זט
forbidden speech, because during a dispute people treat all of
these prohibitions as being permitted.
[ 10 ] Anger: Chazal have taught (Gemara Nedarim 22a) one the Senior Angel Michael, who brings the souls of the righteous near to
must be very careful to avoid this, because the sin of anger is the Creator, approaches this righteous soul and extends to it greeting of
peace, as the pasuk relates “and Malki-Tzedek,” this is the angel Michael,
the Chief Watchman at the Gates of Righteousness, “the King of Shalem,”
meaning, the Heavenly City of Jerusalem, “he brought out (to Abraham)
29. In that Mishnah Rebbe Akivah holds that this type of person has no portion bread and wine,” he pre-empts this soul and approaches him and says to
in Olam Haba. him- Shalom, peace to you as you come in. (Quoted up until this point).
