 to him, still, he should not become disheartened, but instead he
 should strengthen his resolve to uphold the words of Hashem    הֶזָבּ רֵהָזִּיְו ,וֹרֵבֲח תֶא טיִנקְַי אלֶֹּשׁ וּנְיַהְו ."וֹתיִמֲע תֶא שׁיִא
 Yitbarach.  I’ve heard this same idea as being attributed to the    לָכְו .).ט"נ אָעיִצְמ אָבָבּ( ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָאֶשׁ וֹמְכּ ,וֹתְּשִׁאְל וּלִּפֲא
 Vilna Gaon, that it was specifically for this reason the Torah in
 perashat Nitzavim instructs us (Devarim 30:15) “See that today    אוּהֶשׁ ,הָמוֹתְי וֹא הָנָמְלַא איִה םִא טרְָפִבוּ ,תֶתרֶָשְׁמַל ןֵכֶּשׁ
 I am placing before you life and goodness,” and this pasuk is   .דֹאְמ יִליִלְפּ ןוָֹע
 expressed in a singular tense in order to teach us that even in a
 time, Gd forbid, when the sins of the generation are multiplying
 and a reprimand will have no effect on society, nevertheless, each    ארָקְִיַּו( ביִתְכִדּ וֹמְכּ ,הָחָכוֹתּ תַעְשִׁבּ וּלִּפֲא ,םיִנָפּ תַנָבְּלַה .ז
 individual must strengthen his resolve and know that HaKadosh   ."אְטֵח ויָלָע אָשִּׂת אלְֹו ךֶָתיִמֲע תֶא ַחיִכוֹתּ ַחֵכוֹה" :)ז"י ט"י
 Baruch Hu is establishing with him a personal covenant with the
 Torah.  This concept is alluded to in the pasuk (Yeshaya 66:1-2)    ןֶפּ ךְָל רֶמָשִּׁה" :)א"י 'ח םירִָבְדּ( ביִתְכִדּ וֹמְכּ ,הָוֲאַגּ ירְֵבִדּ .ח
 “This is what Hashem said: Heaven is My seat…and I will look
 towards the poor and downtrodden and those who are zealous to    אָתיִאדְִכּ ,ַחוּרָה יֵסַּגְל הרָָהְזַא איִהֶשׁ ,"ךָיֶהלֱֹא 'ה תֶא חַכְּשִׁתּ
 uphold My word.”
               ביִתְכִדּ וֹמְכּ ,רוּסָא בֵלַּבּ וּלִּפֲא הָוֲאַגְו .םָשׁ ןֵיַּע ,.'ה הָטוֹסְבּ
 Moreover,  one  must  realize  that  by  virtue  of  accepting  the   ."בֵל הַּבְגּ לָכּ 'ה תַבֲעוֹתּ" :)'ה ז"ט יֵלְשִׁמ(
 obligation  to  discipline  one’s  speech,  apart  from  the  fact  that
 this person will save himself from several forms of inappropriate    הֶיְהִי אלְֹו" :)'ה ז"י רָבּדְִמַּבּ( רַמֱאֶנֶּשּׁ הַמִּמ ,תקֶלֲֹחַמ ירְֵבִדּ .ט
 speech, he will also receive a separate and distinct reward for
 each day that he internalized this obligation to be “guarded” in his    אוּהֶשׁ  ,).י"ק  ןירִדְֶהְנַסְבּ(  אָתיִאדְִכְו  ."'וּכְו  וֹתָדֲעַכְו  חרַקְֹכ
 speech, as the pasuk states (Tehilim 34:14) “Guard your tongue
 from ‘bad’,” even if no challenges of life were presented to him.     םירִוּסִּאָה לָכּ וֹבּ לוּלָכְו .תקֶלֲֹחַמְבּ קיִזֲחַהְל אלֶֹּשׁ ,הרָָהְזַא
 By way of an example, one who was appointed as a watchman   .רֵתֶּהְכּ ל ֹּכַה וֹלְצֶא הֶשֲׂעַנ זָאֶשׁ ,ל"ַנַּה
 to guard a treasure will be paid a salary as long as he is guarding
 that treasure even if no thieves appear during that time.   ,דֹאְמ רוּמָח ןוָֹע אוּהֶשׁ ,הֶזִּמ םַגּ דֹאְמ רֵהָזִּי ,סַעַכּ ירְֵבִדּ .י

 27.  Quoting  from  the  Mazal  Elul  English  translation  of  Sefer  Shemirat
 HaLashon, the 4th  perek of the Epilogue to Book 1 (Distributed by Feldheim   30.  Quoting from the Mazal Elul English translation of the Introduction to
 Publishers, 5766):  The Zohar Chadash expresses this idea in perashat   Sefer Chafetz Chayim, the 15th Lav:
 Lech Le’cha:  Rebbe Abahu said- Come and see the enormity of the reward      The Torah warns us (in very harsh terms) not to abuse \ torment or cause
 earned by someone who encourages another Jew to do Teshuvah.  Where is   them anguish or pain.  The punishment for the person that violates this
 this concept taught in the Torah? (Answer- Beresheet 14:18)  “and Malki-   Lav is explicit in the Torah (Shemot 22:23) “My wrath will be aroused and
 Tzedek was the king of Shalem.”  Rebbe Chiyyah Rabbah taught when the   I will kill you by the sword and your wives will become widows and your
 soul departs from a righteous person who caused others to make Teshuvah,  children orphans.”
