very grave. Very often anger will lead to conflict and while יאַדַּוְבּ וּלֵּאָכּ םיִשָׁנֲאַו .תִיַבַּה ןַיְנִבּ תֶא בֵכַּעְמ הֶז לָכֶּשׁ ,'וּכְו
in a state of anger one is very likely to violate several Laveen.
While in a state of anger, one is irrational and every corrupt .וּנְבַתָכֶּשׁ וֹמְכּ ,תִיַבַּה ןַיְנִבְל וּרְזַעַיְו ,דֹאְמ הָלוֹדְגּ ןָתוּכְז
thought is perceived as being straight \ rational. This (irrational
mindset) is the basis for Chazal’s teaching (22a) that all types of ןָיְנִעָבּ וּקְזַּחְתִיֶּשׁ ,םיִשָׁנֲאָה םָתוֹאְל ןוּפָצ בוֹט ברַ הָמַּכְו
Gehinnom will dominate an angry person, since every single Lav
that is violated creates its own unique punishment appropriate קֶלֵח םֶהָל הֶיְהִי םִא וּלִּפֲאַו ,הֶזַּה אְטֵחַה ןֵקַּתְל רֵהַמְל הֶזַּה
to that Lav. Therefore it is correct for any understanding person טרְָפִבוּ .יאדְַכּ ןֵכּ םַגּ - הֶז ןָיְנִעְבּ םיִפָלֲא ףֶלֶאֵמ דָחֶא תוּכְזוּ
to be careful and avoid (unnecessary discussions and) all
confrontations. One must minimize very much any confrontation וּלִּפֲאַדּ ,)ַחֹנ תַשׁרָָפּ ףוֹס שָׁדָח רַהֹז( שׁוֹדָקַּה רַהֹּזַבּ רָאֹבְמֶּשׁ הַמ יִפְל
as long as there is no great compelling reason to be involved םוֹלָשַּׁה תַדִּמ ןירְִמוֹשׁ וּיָה םִא ,)תַחַא הָלִּהקְ( אָדֲח אָתְּשׁיִנְכ יֵבּ
in it, because by virtue of any confrontation (discussion), it is
very likely that one will become insulted and get angry. Good- יַחַא ,ןֵכּ לַעְו .וּנקֵדְִצ ַחיִשְׁמ איִבָהְל םָחֹכְבּ שֵׁי ,יוּארָָכּ
hearted people (lit., those with beautiful souls) will be careful to וּנֵנָיְנִעְבוּ .הֶזַּה שׁוֹדָקַּה ןָיְנִעָבּ רֵהַמְנוּ דֹאְמ קֵזַּחְתִנ ,יַערְֵו
also avoid idle conversation because it robs a person of a large
segment of one’s life and is a waste of time. Furthermore, it is הָדוּהְי יֵנְבִל םוֹלָשַּׁה ויָלָע ךְֶלֶמַּה דִוָדּ רַמָאֶשׁ ,רָמֲאַמַּה ךְָיַּשׁ
written (Mishle 10:19) “In many words (spoken) sin will not be
missing” (meaning excessive speech leads to sin). ךְֶלֶמַּה תֶא ביִשָׁהְל םיִנרֲֹחַא וּיְהִת הָמָּל" :)ב"י ט"י ,'ב לֵאוּמְשׁ(
The basic understanding (the fundamental rule) is one must וֹמְצַעְל הֶכְּזִיְו ,הֶזָבּ קֵזַּחְתִיֶּשׁ שׁיִאָה ירְֵשַׁאְו ."וֹתיֵבּ לֶא
sparingly parcel out one’s speech as much as possible (unless it .]לֵארְָשִׂי לָכְל הֶכַּזיִו ,תוֹרוֹדַּה לָכּ ףוֹס דַע ויָתוֹרוֹדְלוּ
relates to his soul or his physical needs). This concept is illustrated
by the example of a telegram. For each letter spoken, one must ךְרַָבְּתִי 'ה תֶא בֵהוֹאָה שׁיִא לָכְל ןוֹכָנְו יוּארָ ,תֶמֱאֶבוּ
give a reckoning and an accounting, as Chazal have taught
(Gemara Chagigah 5b), that even the least casual conversations יוּלָתֶּשׁ ,הֶז ןָיְנִעְבּ וּקְזַּחְתִיֶּשׁ ,וירָיִכַּמ לָכְל זרֵָזְל וֹתרָוֹתְו
are played back to man at the time of his Judgment. If man קרֶֶפְבּ ליֵעְל וּנרְַאֵבּ רֶשֲׁאַכּ ,הרָוֹתּ לֶשׁ תוֹיִּשׁרָָפּ הָמַּכּ וֹבּ
must speak, then he should think carefully about these ten things
(types of negative speech). In summary of these rules, one must .םיִבּרַָה וּניֵתוֹנוֲֹעַבּ ,םיִשָׁנֲא הֶזיֵאְל רקְֵפֶה וֹמְכּ וּשֲׂעַנְו .'ב
be especially on guard to protect Hashem’s vineyard (his life in
this world) and praiseworthy is his share in this world and in הֶזָבֶּשְׁו ,ןֶהָבּ רָהְזִנֶּשׁ יִמ רָכָשַּׂה לדֶֹּג םֶהיֵנְפִל ַעיִצַּהְלוּ
Olam Haba. וּעְמְשִׁיֶּשׁ םיִשָׁנֲא הָמַּכּ וּאְצָמִּי יאַדַּוְבוּ .הָלֻּאְגַּה ןַיְנִע יוּלָתּ
The acronym for these ten character forms of negative speech is םָדָאָה לֶשׁ וֹרָכְשׂוּ .וֹבּ הָיוּלְתּ םיִבּרַָה תוּכְז הֶיְהִתְו ,וירָָבדְִל
“Ach,” “Gamar,” “HaChashmal,” meaning: (Ach) “Oppressive \
abusive speech and anger,” (Gamar) “Haughtiness and conflict רַהֹזְבּ רָאֹבְמַכּ ,דֹאְמ לוֹדָגּ ,הָבוּשְׁתִבּ רֹזֲחַי רֵחַאֶשׁ ,הֶשׂוֹעֶשׁ
\ controversy and Rechilut,” (HaChashmal) speech that is 'א קֶלֵח ןוֹשָׁלַּה תרַיִמְשִׁבּ יִתּקְַתְּעֶהְו[ .'ךְֶל' תַשׁרָָפּ שָׁדָח
“Embarrassing \ shames others, flattery (manipulative speech),
lies, Lashon Hara and mockery.” ןיִעָמְשִׁנ וירָָבְדּ ןיֵאֶשׁ ,הֶאוֹר אוּה םִא ףַאְו .]ל"ק דוּמַּע
