                                                                                                   אלְֹו םַעַט םֶהָבּ ןיֵא - תוֹברֲָעַו ,ַחירֵ אלְֹו םַעַט - םירִָמְתּ
                 In  this  chapter  I  will  discuss  the  conditions                              אוֹבָיְו ,וּלֵּאְבּ וּלֵּא וּדְגַּאְתִי :אוּה ךְוּרָבּ שׁוֹדָקַּה רַמָא .ַחירֵ
                 (qualities) that govern \ that are relevant to the
                        obligation to discipline one’s speech.                                     םיקִיִדַּצַּה לַע זֵמּרְַמ אוּהֶשׁ ,ַחירְֵו םַעַט וֹבּ שֵׁיֶּשׁ ,גוֹרְתֶאָה
                                                                                                   ןיֵאֶשׁ וּלֵּא לַע וּרְפַּכיִו ,םיִבוֹט םיִשֲׂעַמוּ הרָוֹתּ ןֶהָבּ שֵׁיֶּשׁ

               [ 1 ]  (The first condition is) To understand that one must discipline              לַע ןירְִפַּכְמ םיִמֵלְשַּׁה הֶז יִפְל הֵנִּהְו .ַחירֵ אלְֹו םַעַט אלֹ םֶהָבּ
               one’s mouth, as the pasuk states (Micha 7:5) “From the one who
               lies in your  bosom guard the entranceways to you mouth.”                           םיִאָצְמִנֶּשׁ רוֹדּ לָכְבּ ,ןֵכּ םִאְו .'ה ךְרֶדְֶבּ ןיִכְלוֹה ןיֵאֶשׁ וּלֵּא
               [ 2 ]  Next, one must know what to guard oneself against.  These                    רֵחַאְתִנּ הַמ לַע - לֵארְָשִׂיְבּ םיִמֵלְשׁ תוֹבָברְ םיִפָלֲא הָמַּכּ
               are the ten negative types of speech described above (in the 9th                                      ?ךְָכּ לָכּ תִיַבַּה ןַיְנִבּ
               perek); avoiding them is the essential discipline of guarding one’s
               speech.                                                                             בירֱִחֶהֶשׁ הֶז ןוָֹעֶשׁ אָצְמִנ ,בֵטיֵה ןֵנוֹבְּתִנ רֶשֲׁאַכּ תֶמֱאֶבּ ןֵכָא

               [ 3 ]  (The third condition is) The quality of discipline, meaning, to
               minimize socialization (except in matters of mitzvah) and if one                    הֵנִּהְו .םיִבּרַָה וּניֵתוֹנוֲֹעַבּ ,וּניֵניֵבּ דֵקּרְַמ הָתַּע םַגּ ,תִיַבַּה
               must become involved with a group, one must first ponder to the                     וּיָהֶשׁ תוֹנוֲֹע וֹבּ וּיָה אלֹ ,יִנֵשׁ תִיַבֶּשׁ ,):'ט אָמוֹי( ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָא
               depths of one’s soul what one will say while in that group.  Most
               importantly, one must resolve not to want to listen to anything                     תוְֹצִמ יֵמְיּקְַמוּ הרָוֹתּ הֵבּרְַה וֹבּ הָיָה יִכּ ,ןוֹשׁארִ תִיַבְבּ ןיִיוּצְמ
               that  has  no  personal  relevance.    Moreover,  one  must  be  very               לַע אָליֵמִּמוּ ,םָנִּח תַאְנִשׂ ןוֲֹע וֹבּ הָיָהֶשׁ אָלֶּא .לֵארְָשִׂיְבּ
               careful not to assume any position of authority that will put him
               in constant contact with a group of people through meetings or                      הֶאוֹרָל ַעוּדָיַּכְו( וּהֵערֵ לַע דָחֶא ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל וֹבּ הָיָה הֶז ידְֵי
               discussions, for example, to hold a joint position in the Rabbinate                                       .)םיִשׁרָדְִמְבּ
               or similar positions, because in so doing it is nearly impossible
               not to become entrapped by forbidden speech.  Even if one is
               very humble and tolerant, one can become snagged by forbidden                       ,וּנָלֻּכְבּ ,דֹאְמ וּניֵניֵבּ יוּצָמ הֶזַּה ןוָֹעֶהֶשׁ ,הָתַּע םַגּ הֶז יִפְלוּ
               speech.    One  must  also  be  careful  not  to  become  snared  by                ןירְִבוֹע ןיֵא םיִמיִמְתַּה יאַדַּוְבֶּשׁ ףַאְו .םיִבּרַָה וּניֵתוֹנוֲֹעַבּ
               jealousy, as Chazal have taught (Gemara Sanhedrin 105b), man
               will become jealous of everyone except his son and his students,                    הֶז יוּצָמ יאַדַּוְבּ הרֶקְִמְבּ ןֵכָא ,םוֹלָשְׁו סַח ,תוּדיִמְתִבּ הֶזָבּ
               and in any event, (in that state of mind) man will not be able to                   ,לֶזֶגְבּ ןָבּרֻ :).ה"סק ארְָתָבּ אָבָבּ( ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָאֶשׁ וֹמְכּ ,וּנָלֻּכְבּ
               uphold all of the details of law that are necessary to guard one’s
               speech.                                                                             תרֶֶאָבְמֶּשׁ  ףַאְו(  .ערָָה  ןוֹשָׁלְבּ  ןָלֻּכְו  ,תוֹירֲָעַבּ  ןָטוּעִמוּ
