(and he may not talk about people) unless the content of his וֹרָכְשׂ הֶיְהִיְו ,ךְרַָבְּתִי 'ה יֵניֵעְבּ ןֵח אָצְמִי יאַדַּוְבֶּשׁ שׁיִאָה
speech is permitted by the law.
.דֹאְמ דֹאְמ לוֹדָגּ ךְרַָבְּתִי 'הֵמ
[ 8 ] If one forgets his obligation to control his speech and falls
into the trap of his mouth, one must do Teshuvah for this and תַלָבּקַ לֶשׁ ןָיְנִעָה לדֶֹּג תֶא וּנרְרֵַבֶּשּׁ הַמ יִפְל הֵנִּה .די
not interrupt his guard, as the pasuk states (Kohelet 10:4) “If
a ruler becomes incensed against you, do not leave your place לָכְו .וֹמְצַע לַע לֵבּקְַמֶּשׁ ,יִטרְָפּ שׁיִאְבּ וּלִּפֲא אוּה ,הרָיִמְשַּׁה
(stand your ground) because patience appeases great offenses.” ןָיְנִעְבּ הרָוּבֲח אֵצָמִּתֶּשְׁכּ ,ןָיְנִעָה תַשּׁדֻקְ הָלוֹדְגּ הָמַּכּ ןֵכֶּשׁ
(Regarding this) The implication from Gemara Berachot (19a) is
that whoever is a Talmid Chacham will not delay his Teshuvah, רֹמְשִׁל םָמְצַעְבּ גָיְס תוֹשֲׂעַל ךְרַָבְּתִי 'ה דוֹבְכִל וּקְזַּחְתִיֶּשׁ ,הֶז
even from one night to the next morning, but rather he must do תַחַנ הָמַּכּ ,םירִוּסֲא םירִוּבִּדּ וּרְבּדְַי אלֶֹּשׁ ,רוּבִּדַּה ַח ֹּכ תֶא
Teshuvah that very same day before he goes to sleep and the
reason is in order not to retain any defilement on his Nefesh (even םיִביִבֲחֶשׁ הֶארְִיֶּשְׁכּ ,הֶזִּמ אוּה ךְוּרָבּ שׁוֹדָקַּהְל ַעיִגַּי ַחוּר
for a short time).
.םֶהיֵלֲע תוּכְז דֵמַּלְתּ הָוְצִמוּ הָוְצִמ לָכְו .לֵארְָשִׂיְל ויָתוְֹצִמ
[ 9 ] One must ponder to the depths of one’s soul every Erev ו"כ ארָקְִיַּו( קוּסָפַּה לַע )םיִנֲה ֹּכ תרַוֹתּ( ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָאֶשּׁ הַמ ַעוּדָיְו
Shabbat Kodesh whether or not his behavior as regarding his

speech during the (entire) prior week conformed to the law. And ,"וּפ ּדֹרְִי הָבָברְ םֶכִּמ הָאֵמוּ הָאֵמ הָשִּׁמֲח םֶכִּמ וּפדְרְָו" :)'ח
if he examined his soul and determined that throughout the entire םיִשׂוֹעָה םיִטָעוּמְל ,הָוְצִמ םיִשׂוֹעָה םיִבּרְֻמ הֶמוֹדּ וֹניֵאְדּ
week he did not once fall into the sin of using forbidden speech,
it is correct and appropriate to make a notation in his diary, that .הָוְצִמ
Hashem helped him in this regard, and he should be happy with
his accomplishment and praise Hashem for the help that was אֵפּרְַל ליִחְתַנֶּשׁ ,דֹאְמ ארָוֹנ ןָיְנִע הֶזָבּ שֵׁי םָלֻּכּ לַעְו .וט
extended to him in the past and pray that it continue into the
future. ןַבּרְֻח תֵעֵמ םיִנָשׁ תוֹאֵמ הָמַּכּ הֶז סוּרָהֶה 'ה חַבְּזִמ תֶא הֶזָבּ
וּנרְַאֵבֶּשׁ וֹמְכּ ,ערָָה ןוֹשָׁלְו םָנִּח תַאְנִשׂ ןוֲֹע רוּבֲע תִיַבַּה
[ 10 ] One must not get excited when hearing about anything
that another person did which was contrary to what one wanted, .'ז קרֶֶפּ 'ב קֶלֵח ןוֹשָׁלַּה תרַיִמְשִׁבּ
because by virtue of that excitement words will flow out of
one’s mouth that are inappropriate to speak and very often one הָנֶּניֵא הָבוּשְׁתֶּשׁ ,תוֹבָבְלַּה תַבוֹחְבּ בַתָכֶּשּׁ הַמ ַעוּדָיְו
will discover in the end that the reality was not as he originally
thought. וּלִּפֲא ,ןֵכּ םִאְו .וּנירֵָבְדִּמ אלְֹו וּניֵשֲׂעַמִּמ םִא יִכּ ,תאֵצוֹי
[ 11 ] Even if one sees that several prestigious people are not ןוֹשָׁלְבּ ךָיֶנָפְל וּנאָטָחֶשׁ אְטֵח לַע' ,םיִמָעְפּ הָאֵמ רַמאֹנ םִא
careful to discipline their speech, one may not learn from their ןֵקַּתְל לֵדַּתְּשִׁנְו לֹמֲעַנ אלֶֹּשׁ ןַמְז לָכּ ,'יִפ ּדֹ וּנרְַבּדְִו ,ערָָה
example (one should constantly think about the 24,000 students
of Rebbe Akivah who were killed by the Attribute of Strict ,יַערְֵו יַחַא ,ןֵכּ לַעְו .לָלְכּ ליִעוֹמ וֹניֵא ,הֶשֲׂעַמְבּ הֶז אְטֵח
Justice because they did not extend proper respect to each other). וֹתרָוֹתְו ךְרַָבְּתִי 'ה דוֹבְכִל וּנֵח ֹּכ לָכְבּ לֵדַּתְּשִׁנְו ליִחְתַנ
