               However, in one’s mind one should give them the benefit of a                        ,הָעוּרְגּ הָדִּמ איִה סַעַכַּה .סַעַכַּה תַדִּמ תוֹדוֹא רֵבּדְַנ הָתַּעְו
               doubt  and  judge  them  favorably  by  saying  they  did  not  think
               carefully about the seriousness of the need to control the words                    וּרְמָאְו .הָתוּנְגּ לדֶֹגְבּ ל"ַזֲח ירְֵמַאַמוּ םיִבוּתְכַּה וּגיִלְפִה דֹאְמוּ
               that came out of their mouths.                                        6             .וֹדְּגֶנְכּ הָבוּשֲׁח הָּניֵא הָניִכְשׁ וּלִּפֲא ,סֵעוֹכַּה לָכּ :):ב"כ םירִָדְנ(
               [ 12 ] One must develop the habit of ignoring slights to one’s
               sense of personal esteem (and not be bothered at all by the things                  יוּצָמוּ ,םָדָאָה ןִמ תַעַדַּה תקֶֶלַּתְּסִמ ,סַעַכַּה תוּרְבַּגְּתִה תֵעְבִדּ
               people say about him).  Besides being a holy character trait, in so                 ]ַמּ[ַה לָכְו ,ירְֵמַגְל תוְֹצִמַּהְו הרָוֹתַּה םָדָאָה לֶצֵא זָא וּרקְְפֻהֶשׁ
               behaving Heaven will similarly ignore this person’s sins, as our
               Chazal have taught (Gemara Yomah 23a, Gemara Megillah 28a),                         םירִוּמֲחַה תוֹנוֲֹע לָכְו ,רוֹשׁיִמְל ויָנָפְל זָא םיִשֲׂעַנ םיִשּׁקֲַע
               and this habit becomes a great help to man in resisting anger and                   תקֶלֲֹחַמוּ תוֹלָלקְוּ םירִָבְדּ תַאָנוֹא .רֵתֶּהְכּ וֹלְצֶא זָא םיִשֲׂעַנ
               conflict.
                                                                                                                  .םיִנָפּ תַנָבְּלַהְו ערָָה ןוֹשָׁלְו
               My dear reader, do not challenge what I am saying by arguing
               “Why do we need all of these ethical guidelines since we have
               the teaching of Chazal (Gemara Chulin 89a) in explanation of                        ויָלֵכּ  רֵבַּשְׁמֶּשׁ  שֵׁיְו  ,ויָדָגְבּ  ַערֵקְָמ  סַעַכַּה  לדֶֹּגִמֶּשׁ  שֵׁיְו
               the pasuk (Tehilim 58:2) “Is there silence \ ‘HaOomnam’ when
               you should be speaking justice,” (Gemara Chulin 89a) “What is                       ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָאְו .אָנְוַגּ יאַהְכוּ ,וֹתָמֲחַבּ ויָתוֹעְמ רֵזַּפְמוּ ,וֹתָמֲחַבּ
               the main occupation of a person in this world? (And answers) To                     םוֹיַּהֶשׁ .םיִליִלֱא דֵבוֹעְכּ ךָיֶניֵעְבּ אֵהְי :וּלֵּא לָכּ לַע ):ה"ק תָבַּשׁ(
               make oneself as a deaf mute and close his lips together as if they
               were two grinding millstones.”                                                      ,ךְָכּ הֵשֲׂע ,וֹל רֵמוֹא רָחָמְלוּ ,ךְָכּ הֵשֲׂע ,ערָָה רֶצֵי וֹל רֵמוֹא
               The answer to this argument (i.e., why we need all this advise and                  יאַמוּ .דֵבוֹעְו ךְֵלוֹהְו ,הרָָז הָדוֹבֲע דֹבֲע ךְֵל וֹל רֵמוֹאֶשׁ דַע
               reinforcement to control our mouths) is that this “merchandise”
               (disciplining one’s speech) is very desirable and in so behaving                    ,רָז לֵא וּהֶזיֵא ."רָז לֵא ךְָב הֶיְהִי אלֹ" :)'י א"פ םיִלִּהְתּ( ארָקְ
               one will be protected against all harm.  But not everyone can                            .ערָָה רֶצֵי הֶז ,רֵמוֹא יֵוֲה ?םָדָא לֶשׁ וֹפוּגְבּ שֵׁיֶּשׁ
               acquire it except for those who are very wealthy (spiritually).
               But people like ourselves are realistically compelled to behave
               in this character trait (of speaking, but only those things that are                יֵניִמ לָכּ - סֵעוֹכַּה לָכּ :).ב"כ םירִָדְנ(  ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָא דוֹעְו
               necessary).
                                                                                                   וֹמְצַע יֵנְפִבּ ןוָֹע לָכְלִדּ ,איִה הָנָוַּכַּהְו .וֹבּ ןיִטְלוֹשׁ םֹּנִהיֵגּ
               But during the holy days of awe (Yamim Nora’im) it is obviously
               proper  and  appropriate  to  conduct  ourselves  with  this  holy                  סַעַכַּה תַדִּמ ידְֵי לַעְו ,ןוָֹע וֹתוֹאְל דָחֻ יְמַה שֶׁנֹע םֹּנִהיֵגַּבּ שֵׁי
               character trait.  I’ve also heard that this is the way the great and                הָדִּמַּה ַערְֹבּ ןֵנוֹבְּתִמַּל תוֹנוֲֹעָה יֵניִמ לָכְל טַעְמִכּ םָדָאָה אָבּ
               holy sage, Rabbi Yitzchak, the senior presiding judge of the Beit
               Din of Petersburg conducted himself during the period between                       ןיִבּרְֻמ ויָתוֹנוֲֹעֶשׁ ַעוּדָיְבֶּשׁ ,ל"ַזֲח ויָלָע וּרְמָאֶשׁ דַע ,איִהַה
               the start of Chodesh Elul until after Yom Kippur, namely, that he                   דוֹעְו .וֹבּ ןיִטְלוֹשׁ םֹּנִהיֵגּ יֵניִמ לָכּ :וּרְמָא ןֵכָל .ויָתוֹיֻּכְזִּמ
               behaved as though he was mute (and did not speak), as Chazal
               have advised; and if one does not want to behave like this all of                   ןיקְִסוֹפּ וּלִּפֲא ,סֵעוֹכֶּשׁ םָדָא לָכּ :):ו"ס םיִחָסְפּ( ל"ַזֲח וּרְמָא
