(2:5). From that incident, one can derive a very straightforward תוֹר ָּצַה ל ָּכִמ :אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה רַמָאֶשׁ ,שׁרָדְ ִּמ ַּב אָתיִא ּדְ
logical deduction. (Emphatically) How very much “good” will ידְֵי לַעֶשׁ וּנְיַה[ ,םֶכְתֶא לי ִּצַהְל לוֹכָי יִנֲא ,םֶכיֵלֲע תוֹא ָּבַה
the Master of the Universe give to that Jewish man who closes
his mouth and does not respond to a provocation etc. םַּג ,ל ֵּבקַ ְּלִמוּ ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל ר ֵּפַס ְּלִמ ןֶהיֵּיַח יֵמי ִּב ןירִיִהְז וּיְהִּיֶשׁ
[ 6 ] By virtue of a person speaking words of holiness, one causes םיִגרְְטקְַמַה י ִּפ ם ֹּתְסִל הָנֲאוֹתּ הֶז ָּב אָצְמִי אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה
holiness to envelop his very being. But the opposite is also true. ה ָּתַא ןיֵאְו ,ךְָמְצַע ןֵמְטַה ,ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל ְּב לָבֲא .]םֶהֵמ ל ֵּבקַ ְּלִמ
Therefore, one must be very careful in this regard.
שֵׁשׁ ְּב" :)ט"י 'ה בוֹיִּא( אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה רַמָא ךְָכְו .דָסְפִנ
[ 7 ] Those who are careful to avoid this sin and protect their
mouths both publicly and privately is indicative of the fact that ."אֵבָח ֵּת ןוֹשָׁל טוֹשׁ ְּב")וּ( )א"כ םָשׁ( ,ךֶָלי ִּצַי תוֹרָצ
this person is Gd fearing and (each of the mitzvot he performed
will create an advocate) this mitzvah will testify on his behalf in אלֹ ,םוֹלָשְׁו סַח אֵטוֹח םָדָאָה םִא וּלִּפֲא ּדַ ,דוֹע עדְַו .אי
the Coming Future (on his Day of Judgment).
ויָלָע ר ֵּבַּגְתִּיֶשׁ ְּכ אלֹ םִא ,בוּיִּחְל וֹני ּדִ ויָלָע רֵמָּגִי הרֵָהְמ ִּב
[ 8 ] And now (emphatically), one can ponder the enormity of the .ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל ןוֲֹע
reward that will be earned by those who discipline their speech
and guard it so that it does not becomes filthied. Regarding this, לַע .הֶשֲׂעַמ הֶשׂוֹעָה ןִמ רוּמָח ,ויִפ ְּב הרָיִמֲאֶשׁ וּניִצָמ .בי
Chazal have taught (Gemara Kedushin 39b) [Gemara Makkot
23b] “One who remains passive and does not commit a sin וֹמְסרְַפְלוּ וֹרֵבֲח לַע לֵּגרְַל םָדָאָה תֶא תיִסֵמ רֶצֵּיַה םִא ,ן ֵּכ
(when the opportunity to sin presents itself) will receive reward
as though he actually performed a mitzvah. Man can merit ךְֵליֵל וֹתיִסְמ הָיָה ערָָה רֶצֵּיַה וּלִּא ,וֹשְׁפַנ ְּב ןֵנוֹבְּתִי ,יאַנְגִל
this reward as often as he conquers his inclination and does not הָיָה יא ּדַַו ְּב ,הרֵָבֲעַל תַחַא הָלוּתְבִל וֹתוֹתַּפְלוּ תוֹנוֹזַּה תיֵבְל
use speech that is forbidden, namely language that is mocking,
Lashon Hara, lies, deceitful, flattery (manipulative language), יִנדֵירִוֹתְו יִנֵפ ּדְרְ ִּת ,ירְִצִי ךָ ְּל הַמ :וֹל רֹמאֵל וֹרְצִי ְּב רֵעוֹגּ
oppressive (abusive), Rechilut, confrontational \ argumentative, ,ל ֹּכַה יֵניֵע ְּב ה ָּמִלְכוּ ה ָּפרְֶחְל הֶיְהֶא םַגְו ,תַחַשׁ רֵאְבִל
anger and embarrassing. In controlling himself and avoiding
all of these forms of speech, man demonstrates his respect for ,וּנּ ֶּמִמ רוּמָח אוּהֶשׁ ,הֶז ןֶפֹא ְּב רֶמֹחָו לקְַו .רָב ָּדַה ה ֶּלַּגְתִּיֶשׁ ְּכ
Hashem and his fear of His Holiness and then necessarily his לֶשׁ אָיְלַמ ָּפ ל ָּכ יֵנְפִל אוֹבָל דיִתָעֶל וֹנוֹלקְ ה ֶּלַּגְתִי ה ָּמ ַּכ
merit will increase without any limit.
.םֹּנִהיֵּגַה שֶׁנֹע דַב ְּלִמ ,הָלְעַמ
[ 9] One who constantly disciplines his speech and accustoms
himself not to say anything at all that is contrary to the Will לַע וֹתָניִכְשׁ הרְֶשַׁמ אוּה ךְוּר ָּב שׁוֹד ּקַָה י ִּכ ַעוּדָי הֵּנִהְו .גי
of Hashem Yitbarach amplifies his merit until they reach the
Heavens. But that is not so if he behaves in the opposite way. ,ר ַּמַה ןוָֹעֶהֵמ רֵהָּזִהְל ןיִכירְִצ דֹאְמ דֹאְמ ןֵכָלְו ,לֵארְָשִׂי
[ 10 ] One who is careful not to “believe” Lashon Hara, and .םוֹלָשְׁו סַח ,הָניִכְשַּׁה קוּלִּס םרֵוֹגֶּשׁ
