               you will merit (i.e., you will receive “good”) both in this world                   ַעוּדָּיֶשּׁ הַמ יִפ ְּכ ,הֶּזַה ר ַּמַה ןוָֹעֶהֵמ רֵהָּזִהְל ךְירִָצ דֹאְמוּ .די
               and in Olam Haba.  The expression “keep yourselves away from”
               includes many things, as Chazal have taught in Gemara Shvu’ot                       הָנְבִנ  אלֶֹּשׁ  רוֹדּ  ל ָּכֶשׁ  ,).'ה  אָמוֹי  יִמְלַשׁוּרְי(  ארָָמְּגַה  רַמֲאַמ
               (31a) in commentary on the pasuk (Shemot 23:7) “Stay away                           סַח ,הֶיְהִי אלֶֹּשׁ ,ויָמָי ְּב ברֱַחֶנ וּלִּא ְּכ ,ויָמָי ְּב שׁ ָּדקְ ִּמַה תי ֵּב
               from a lie.”  Please see that reference, as this is not the place to
               elaborate on this topic.                                                            ר ַּמַה ןוָֹעֶה הֶזָל םרֵוֹגּ רֵתוֹי ְּבֶשׁ ,תִי ַּבַה ן ַּברְָח ְּב ף ָּתֻשׁ ,םוֹלָשְׁו
               [ 4 ]  For all the times that one constantly guards his speech he                                         .ַעוּדָּי ַּכ ,הֶּזַה
               will earn an exalted position in Gan Eden.  The Vilna Gaon has
               addressed this concept in his letter, Aleem LeTerufah, in quoting
               the Midrash, that for each and every moment that man does not                       סוּנקְרְוֹהְל הָּו ִּצֶשׁ לוֹדָּגַה רֶזֶעיִלֱא 'ר  תַאָּוַצ ְּב  אָתיִא .וט
               respond to an insult or to a provocation, he merits receiving the
               Hidden Radiance that is so profound that no angel or being can                      י ִּכ .םֶהירְֵבַחֵמ יאַנְּג  םירְִמוֹאָה תרַוּבֲח ַּב בֵשׁ ֵּת לַא' :וֹנ ְּב
               fathom the totality of its greatness.                                               םידְִמוֹעָה לָכְו ,םיִב ָּתְכִנ רֶפ ֵּס ַּב ,הָלְעַמְל םיִלוֹע םירִָב ּדְַהֶשׁ ְּכ

               [ 5 ]  On occasion, one who guards his speech will merit that the                   תֶפֶחרְַמ יא ּדַַו ְּב תֶמֱאֶבוּ .'עַשׁרֶָה תרַוּבֲח םֵשׁ ְּב םיִב ָּתְכִנ םָשׁ
               world will continue to exist because of him.  For example, at the
               moment of an argument, when he is humiliated, and this person                       דָחֶא  לָכְל  תיִסֵמ  ערָָה  רֶצֵּיַהְו  ,הָארָוֹנ  הָאְמֻט  ַחוּר  םָשׁ
               struggles and conquers his inclination to answer back, and he                       ם ָּל ֻּכ אוֹבָל דיִתָעֶל םיִנוֹדִּנ וּיְהִּיֶשׁ ידֵ ְּכ ,םירִוּפּ ִּס ַּב ַעֵּיַסְל
               does not answer back, as Chazal have described (Gemara Chulin
               89a) in commenting on the pasuk (Eyov 26:7) “He suspends the                        :):'ה תוֹכַּמ( הָנְשׁ ִּמַהֵמ ַעוּדָּיַכְו .רוּמָחֶה שֶׁנֹע ָּב םֶהירְֵבַח םִע
               world on nothingness.”  On what basis does the universe continue                    יִמ ,ן ֵּכ לַעְו .הרֵָבֲע ירְֵבוֹע ְּכ וֹשְׁנָע ,הרֵָבֲע ירְֵבוֹעְל ל ָּפְטִּנַה
               to exist?  On the basis of those who keep their mouths closed
               during a conflict.  This reward is earned measure for measure.                      .שֵׁאָה ןִמ ַחרֵוֹב ְּכ וּלֵּאָה םיִשָׁנֲאָה ןִמ חרְַבִי ,תַע ּדַ ר ַּב אוּהֶשׁ
               On occasion, one’s sins will create an excess of prosecutors and
               it is possible that they would annihilate the universe.  But because
               Gd acts in a system of measure for measure, and because of these                    הָאְבוּהְו  ,)'ב  הָכָלֲה  'א  קרֶ ֶּפ(  הָאֵפ ּדְ  א ָּתְפֶסוֹתּ ַּב  אָתיִא  .זט
               people who kept their mouths closed and remained quiet during a
               conflict, so too will HaKadosh Baruch Hu keep the mouths of those                   ,הֶּזַה םָלוֹע ָּב םָדָאָה ןִמ ןיִערְָפִנ תוֹרֵבֲע שׁלָֹשׁ לַע :ג"ַמ ְּס ַּב
               prosecutors  closed.    My  brother,  please  understand  something                 יוּלִּּג ,הרָָז הָדוֹבֲע :ןֵה וּלֵּאְו .א ָּבַה םָלוֹעָל וֹל תֶמֶּיקַ ןרֶ ּקֶַהְו
               even more, even (Abraham Aveinu’s nephew) Lot, who was not
               an important person at all, as the pasuk testifies (Beresheet 13:11)                הֶז יֵנ ְּפִמוּ .ם ָּל ֻּכ דֶגֶנ ְּכ ערָָה ןוֹשָׁלְו ,םיִמ ָּד תַכיִפְשׁוּ תוֹירֲָע
               “and Lot left (the company of his uncle, Abraham Aveinu) to go to                   וֹזַּה הָערָָה ה ָּד ִּמַהֵמ וֹמְצַע רֹמְשִׁל םָדָאָה ךְירִָצ דַבְל ןָיְנִעָה
               the East,” (please see Rashi’s commentary on that pasuk), even so
               when Lot heard Abraham tell (Pharaoh) “She (Abraham’s wife,                         ויָלָע וּרְבַעַּיֶשׁ תוֹאָל ְּתַהְו תוֹערָָה ל ָּכֶשׁ ,וֹנְנוֹבְּתִה ְּב ,דֹאְמ
               Sarah) is my sister” and he remained silent, the Torah ascribes                     ר ּקִַע לָבֲא ,ןוָֹעֶה לֶשׁ תוֹר ֵּפַה רוּבֲע קרַ אוּה ,ויָּיַח יֵמְי ל ָּכ
               to Lot the title (Lot is now considered as part of) “Abraham’s
               lineage” and He gave some inheritance to Lot (as a reward for                          .אוֹבָל דיִתָעֶל וֹל רוּמָשׁ וֹשְׁנָעְו ,וֹל לָחְמִנ אלֹ ןוָֹעֶה
