Healing
Swirling seas of blue and green
rise and fall before our eyes.
The tide carries us away from the
trash lined shores.
As we float, decades of debris
come to view on the waves.
The sea glimmers, and sunlight bounces off
shining plastic and candy wrappers.
The colorful array of trash carries us;
we can only guess there is water
somewhere beneath.
Our vacation quickly turns into routine
as we spend our week on the sea clearing
away the trash we see.
We make frequent trips to land so our boat
does not sink from the pounds of trash we collect.
We are alone with the sea as we
scoop out memories from the past
ever-preserved in plastics.
