LGBT Community Outreach

It is estimated that there are over 120,000 LGBT individuals
over the age of 65 in New York City. This older LGBT
generation has lived through much discrimination, social
stigma and prejudice. As a
result, many delay seeking
medical treatment and
experience behavioral
health issues causing a
greater risk for chronic
and complex illnesses.
Many also live alone and lack family support systems.

VNSNY is proactively collaborating with community-based
organizations and providers across New York City to help
reach these vulnerable older LGBT adults and to help them
feel safe to be open about their identity in support of their
home health care needs. VNSNY sta is
trained to be aware of and sensitive to the
needs of our LGBT patients and members.
We proudly hold SAGECare’s Platinum-
level LGBT cultural competency credential
(its highest level), a rming our commitment to treating
every patient with empathy, courtesy and respect.
