Identifying patients:
The Palliative Performance Scale
• The Palliative Performance Scale is a validated tool used to assess
a patient’s functional performance and determine progression
towards end of life.
The PPS has 11 levels, measured in 10% increments, 100% being
the best, and 0% being the worst.
• These scores fall into 3 broad stages:
− Stable
− Transitional
− End-of-Life
• There are five observable parameters in the functional assessment:
− Degree of ambulation
− Ability to do activities
− Ability to do self-care
− Intake
− Level of consciousness
