P. 5
Melanin pigment comes in two
central varieties, called pheomelanin
and eumelanin.
The latter is responsible for the
brownish appearance of skin while
the former is responsible for the
reddish appearance of skin.
In other words, people with darker
skin tones have higher levels of
eumelanin.
Meanwhile, pheomelanin is more
prevalent in lighter skinned
individuals.
