There he erected a big stone. One top of the
stone he placed an anvil.
And inside the anvil he stuck a sword with
the following inscription: “Whoever pulls this
sword out of the anvil shall become the king
of England.”
Merlin explained to the people that the
sword was a magic sword. Only the person
who was wise enough to rule over England
would be able to pull it out of the stone.
Many nobles from all over the country came
to that churchyard in Westminster, trying
their hand at pulling out the sword from the
stone.
But they all failed, even the strongest
amongst them.
