P. 13
Arthur was small and thin, barely capable
of holding up a sword but Merlin saw
leadership qualities in him, qualities that
could unite the divided country.
He could rescue England from its desolate
state. Merlin therefore trained Arthur to
become a just and compassionate ruler,
hoping that he would one day transform
England into the greatest kingdom known
to humankind.
Then, one day, when Arthur had turned
fifteen years of age, Merlin took him to the
churchyard in Westminster to see if he
could lift the sword from the stone.
In the churchyard a crowd had gathered,
waiting eagerly to see if a new king would
be crowned that day.
