Joinder of claims

         • FRCP 18(a) provides that a litigant asserting a claim for relief may join

as many claims as she or he has against an adversary, regardless of

            subject matter.

         • Compulsory joinder is required for any person who has a material
            interest in the case if

            – in his or her absence, complete relief cannot be accorded, or

            – his or her interest is such that proceeding without him or her would be prejudicial.

         • Permissive joinder applies to parties who may be joined (proper

            parties).

         • Impleader is a special type of joinder for which a defendant can bring in

a third party who may be liable for the plaintiff’s claim.
