IMPLEMENTATION OF
PROJECT
Objectives 1. To disseminate the knowledge of separation process in order to enhance
the capability of steam explosion units for the pre-treatment of the cellu-
lose production from Oil Palm Frond (OPF).
2. To increase the economic gain and production capability of the industry
through this technology.
3. To implement a state of the art technology for the conventional steam
explosion technology.
Methodology As in the attachment 1
Activities Conducted 1. Study and report of the whole pilot plant operations with regards to pro-
cesses flow, steam explosion unit, boiler, steam supply, and vacuum tec-
hnology.
2. Process and operational activities for all system and machines in the pilot
plant especially steam explosion unit and its post operation system.
3. Redesign of the system based on the earlier report on the suitability of th-
e system for integration of vacuum technology into existing steam explo-
sion system.
4. Redesign of the system based on fabricator advised to improvise and to
overcome over-design and to minimize the cost of fabrication.
Output 1. Report on the suitability of the system with the integration of the existing
receiving system with new vacuum installation.
2. Report on the design and design for the fabrication with fabrication hou-
se.
3. Initial data for the baseline of the project against the improved steam e-
xplosion system version.
Industry 1. Report on the existing system design improvement and cost for improve-
ment.
2. Report and design for improved processing condition based on the imp-
roved system. 103
Public Higher Learning Institute 1. Strengthen the university-industry linkage by involvement in discussion w-
ith the industry personnel.
2. Design of the system that meets the industry requirement, and improved
processing conditions.
3. Some equipment on the plant allowed to be used for research purpose.
Human Capital Development 1. The graduate intern employed were trained for the operation of the va-
cuum-assisted separation process.
2. New job opportunities for the graduates in biotechnology and chemical
engineering processes.
3. The graduate intern were exposed to the working environment and imp-
roved communication skill.
PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED
1. No full-time instructor at the plant to conduct the practical work.
2. Some machine or equipment frequently break down.
3. Integration of design and system need to be consulted with appropriately approved engineers for
approval with certification body such as JKKP.
