Human Performance

You can switch your attention deliberately (e.g., when you are keeping an eye

on someone or something) or automatically (e.g., when a sudden noise grabs

                your attention).

In some situations, the demands for attention capacity can be very high, such
as when working in an open office where you must constantly ignore noise.

You can divide your attention between different tasks; for example, you can
drive a car while having a conversation with a passenger.

Dividing attention between several tasks at the same time puts extra strain on

                brain resources.

                2.7.2.2 Attention and learning

Attention is absolutely necessary for learning.

To learn something new, you must be adequately focused on important parts
of a book or what an expert or teacher is saying.

Without attention, you would have great difficulty learning and remembering

                new skills!

                2.7.2.3 Attention and age

As you get older, attention resources decrease, and sensitivity to noise and
                distractions increases.

This means that with age, you may become less efficient at multitasking.

                2.7.2.4 Improving attention skills

Everyday life demands various types of attention. It requires a certain amount

of training to improve these different types of attention.
