Meteorology
If we have any doubt about whether the weather is suitable for flying, we
typically say, "If in doubt, don’t fly."
If a SIGMET has been issued, there is dangerous weather in that area.

3.9.1.1 SIGMET
When weather conditions are or could be dangerous for flight, a SIGMET
(Significant Meteorological Information) is issued. A SIGMET is a meteorological
report about important weather conditions that can affect flight safety.
SIGMET reports describe dangerous or severe weather phenomena such as:
- Thunderstorms and turbulence
- Icing
- Volcanic ash
- Poor visibility due to weather conditions like fog or sandstorms
- Strong winds and other hazardous atmospheric phenomena
The table shows the 13 weather phenomena for which SIGMETs should be
issued.
