Flight performance and planning
The weights A to D (see drawing previous page) and their moment arms (a to d)
can be found in the instruction manual.
To find a center of gravity,
you need a reference plane
(datum).
The datum can be found,
for example, in the
aircraft's weighing report.
From the weighing report,
we have datum and
weights. We need this to
find the moment.
To find the moment, multiply the moment arm by the weight.
Moment = weight * distance (kg cm)
To find the total moment with respect to the datum, the calculated moments are
summed.
To determine the aircraft's center of gravity, the sum of the moment is divided by
the aircraft's weight.
In practice, one looks at the aircraft's load sheet.
When flying in the utility category (aircraft designed to withstand greater loads
(e.g. aero-aircraft or aircraft in the normal category), the limits for the front and
rear centers of gravity are less than in the normal category.
