                8.5.3 Fuel systems

Here you can see the fuel system

                for a Piper 28.

The illustration is just to give you
an idea of how an aircraft's fuel

                system works.

In the following, we will review

some of the parts of the fuel

                system and their use.

                8.5.3.1 Fuel pump

Aircraft are usually equipped with a mechanical fuel pump in the engine and an

                electric pump.

The primer (also called a priming pump) sprays fuel into the intake before one

or more cylinders. It is needed for engine start. Especially in the cold periods. The

POH will tell about how to start the engine and the use of priming.

The electric pump is used for engine start and as a back-up during take-off and

                landing.

On high-wing aircraft, an extra fuel pump is not needed, as gravity does the job.

These are called gravity feed systems.

If your aircraft has an injection engine, a booster pump may be installed, which

is used to prime a cold engine before engine starts up.
