                8.5.3.2 Fuel selectors

Below is a fuel system from Cessna.

The fuel selector has 4 positions:

                 - Left (L)
                 - Right (R)

                 - Both

                 - Off

                When the selector is
                in Both, you can

                consider the 2 tanks

                as “connected tanks”.

                The special thing

                about this is that the

                fuel level in such

                aircraft will be equal

                in height to the MSL

                and parallel to the

                MSL.

This means that if the selector is set to Both and you fill up one tank, fuel will

                flow to the other tank.

When you have filled up one tank, the fuel will flow to the other tank, and while
you are getting ready to fill this tank, the first tank will have been drained of

perhaps 20 liters of fuel if you have taken a long time to move the ladder to the
other tank. Therefore, the selector must be set to L before refueling.
