8.5.3.2 Fuel selectors
Below is a fuel system from Cessna.
The fuel selector has 4 positions:
- Left (L)
- Right (R)
- Both
- Off
When the selector is
in Both, you can
consider the 2 tanks
as “connected tanks”.
The special thing
about this is that the
fuel level in such
aircraft will be equal
in height to the MSL
and parallel to the
MSL.
This means that if the selector is set to Both and you fill up one tank, fuel will
flow to the other tank.
When you have filled up one tank, the fuel will flow to the other tank, and while
you are getting ready to fill this tank, the first tank will have been drained of
perhaps 20 liters of fuel if you have taken a long time to move the ladder to the
other tank. Therefore, the selector must be set to L before refueling.
